TO: U.S. Elected Official

The mourning dove has been legally protected in Michigan since 1905. I recently learned that certain organized hunting groups are pushing a new measure to authorize the target shooting of these gentle birds of peace. They have introduced House Bill 5478, a bill that will transfer authority to "designate" a new species as game from the Legislature over to the non-elected Natural Resource Commission, which has already stated its strong wish to institute a dove hunt. This bill will affect ALL future wildlife issues in the state, but is being pushed specifically to establish a dove hunting season.

I am writing to you to express my opposition to Michigan House Bill 5478. These birds have been protected by law for nearly 100 years. Opening hunting on these birds will threaten their future and possibility eliminate the species all together.

As a taxpayer with an interest in protecting wildlife, I am concerned about this situation and want you to ensure me that you are taking the appropriate action to oppose this bill and protect these birds.

Please acknowledge this message, and please let me know what your position is on this very serious matter. This is important to me and to your other constituents.

My personal message to you is:

Sincerely,
