I am writing to you to express my concern about the failure of Colorado's legislature to pass an amendment to expand the scope of the hate crimes law. Currently, the hate crime law in Colorado has expanded to crimes motivated by racial and/or religious prejudice. Senate Bill 9 would expand the scope to include crimes motivated by prejudice against the victim based upon the victim's disability(ies), age, gender and/or sexual orientation.

To believe that in this day and age hate crimes are still somewhat tolerated is simply inexcusable. The lack of progress made on this amendment over the past five years suggests that those who are have experienced hate crimes or who have watched their families or friends fall victim to hate crimes are not being taken seriously by our elected officials. Every citizen or visitor to our state should have the confidence of knowing that hate crimes in Colorado will not be tolerated.

Senate Bill 9 needs to be passed immediately. Perpetrators of hate crimes should not only be subjected to civil liability, but they should also face maximum criminal prosecution, and passage of Senate Bill 9 will further this goal.

Those elements of society who attempt to impose their own views through violence, including, in some cases, murder, deserve to be severely punished. If violence against any class of individuals is tolerated for even a moment, we must reevaluate the safety of all citizens of Colorado. Local law enforcement must be equipped with the appropriate laws to maintain a peaceful society.
