Dear Elected Official:

I am writing to you to express my concern regarding the refusal of insurance companies to pay for reconstructive surgery needed to restore normal appearance following non-elective surgeries (e.g. mastectomy) or as a result of illness, developmental abnormalities, infection, tumors, accidents or diseases. It is almost as important to attend to a patient's emotional well-being as it is to treat the underlying condition. Part of the treatment should include restoring self-confidence by restoring a presentable appearance. It is inexcusable to allow insurers to deny these claims. This issue is important to me and many of your constituents. We have either personally experienced a denial of such a claim, or know someone who has, or are fearful that it may happen to us in the future, and we would like a legislative change now. Please protect us from this type of abuse on the part of health insurers.
