Dear Elected Official:

I am writing to you to express my concern about the refusal of some health insurers to cover prescription contraceptives. It is my understanding that each year more than 3,000,000 pregnancies take place in this country and more than one half of all pregnancies are unintended.

I believe that contraceptive services are part of basic health care, allowing families to both adequately space desired pregnancies and avoid unintended pregnancies. Unwanted pregnancies can threaten the economic viability of families. The additional costs of providing care, education and additional insurance costs for a child is often a heavy burden for families that are not in a financial position to provide the necessary care for a child. Many married couples today are choosing not to have children.

Providing insurance coverage for contraceptives will also reduce the number of abortions. Most women in the United states, including three-quarters of women of childbearing age, rely on some form of private insurance they receive through their employer, a family member's employer, or the individual market to cover their medical expenses.

As my elected official I would like you to support legislation for the coverage of prescription contraceptives. A recent government study revealed that eight out of ten insured adults support contraceptive coverage.
