Dear Elected Official:

I am writing to you to express my concern for the protection of American bears. The pending House version of the Farm Bill did not include the protection of bears from import and export trading, and did not prohibit the interstate trade of bear viscera which is widely used in traditional Asian medicine, despite the availability of synthetic and herbal substitutes that are widely sold at health food stores. Regardless of the debate of the effective use of bear viscera for medicinal purposes, consumers have healthy alternatives that are readily available. The protection of the bear population in the United States is critically important to their existence as without the Bear Protection amendment, they could easily become fair game to hunters and exporters. We have seen an entire species of wildlife become extinct due to hunting. Let’s not let that happen to bears. I oppose hunting of bears whether it is used to control wildlife population, for economic gain, or for any other purpose.

I urge you to reinstate the Bear Amendment into the House version of the Farm Bill as soon as possible. It is up to our laws and policies to protect, not persecute, wildlife. Man should treat the earth and its inhabitants as trust property, to be cared for wisely and humanely. Because animals are unable to speak for themselves, it is up to us to speak for them.

This issue is important to me and to many of your constituents. Please protect our animals as they are an important part of our society and we need to ensure their safety and well being. They depend on us to protect them and as our elected official I hope you will take this into consideration.
